WIEGO

Women in Informal Employment: Globalizing and Organizing (WIEGO) is an international network that brings together worker organizations, researchers, statisticians and development practitioners to improve the conditions of workers in informal employment. WIEGO’s mission is to challenge the systems that cause poverty and inequality and to build a more just world of work. The network works with and supports organizations of street vendors, domestic workers, home‑based workers and waste pickers across the globe, combining research, advocacy and capacity‑building.

With IRIS, WIEGO has been creating narrative research and training opportunities that amplify informal workers’ experiences. In Bangkok and Delhi, the collaboration produced short social‑media videos based on interviews with street vendors and home‑based workers, highlighting how climate change, rising living costs and inadequate social protection impact their livelihoods. In Accra, WIEGO led a media‑advocacy project that used storytelling to draw public and government attention to challenges around climate change, taxation, public space and market infrastructure. The project organized television and radio segments where workers engaged with policymakers on issues such as childcare, access to public space and the right to organize. These initiatives aim to amplify the voices of informal workers, spark conversation and encourage action to improve working conditions.
